Manzanar, 2022
Amist the hot desert lies the snow mountain. 4 hours north from Los Angeles. During World War II, it became one of ten internment camps where over 120,000 Japanese Americans were forcibly relocated under Executive Order 9066. Once a thriving agricultural community, Manzanar was transformed into a desolate prison full of Japanese and some accused Asian, surrounded by barbed wire, cabin with no window and hastily built barracks. In the 21st century, Manzanar reflects the ongoing California housing crisis, with skyrocketing rents, displacement, and a growing unhoused population. Today and once again, re-giving the little town new significance and attention is my reflection on cultural, political, environmental and economical relations to the space we are able to use.
